 Abstract:  The Congregational Union of Cleveland Churches was organized in 1853, as the Cleveland Congregational Conference, to oversee the organization of new churches and the mergers of existing churches in Cleveland, Ohio, and to provide financial assistance. In 1912 it merged with the City Missionary Society to form the Congregational Union of Cleveland. In 1963 the Union was merged into the Western Reserve Association of the United Church of Christ. The collection consists of views of the member churches, officers, and activities of the Congregational Union of Cleveland Churches, of Cleveland and northeastern Ohio.

 Abstract:  St. Stanislaus Church was the first Polish Roman Catholic parish in Cleveland, Ohio. It was established in 1873 in the Slavic Village neighborhood and was the largest parish in the diocese during the early 1900s. The collection consists of photographs of interior and exterior views of St. Stanislaus Church, Cleveland, Ohio. Included are portraits of various pastors, brothers, and members of the congregation.

 Abstract:  First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland (Ohio) was the result of a merger in 1927 of the First Baptist Church of Cleveland and the Cleveland Heights Baptist Church. The First Baptist Church of Cleveland was formally established in 1833. In 1919, members who had moved east formed the Cleveland Heights church. In 1929, the combined congregations erected a new church building, designed by Cleveland architects Walker and Weeks, at 3630 Fairmount Blvd. The collection consists of views of First Baptist Church and a Bible class outing (1908) and a portrait of Dr. J. R. Owens.

4Title:  Euclid Avenue Congregational Church Photographs

 Abstract:  Euclid Avenue Congregational church was founded in 1843, in Cleveland, Ohio. Until 1853 it had a Presbyterian form of government and was called the Presbyterian Church of East Cleveland. A Hough Avenue branch of the church existed from 1890 until 1934, under the name Hough Avenue Congregational Church. In 1934 it merged with the Euclid Avenue church. The Euclid Avenue Congregational Church was destroyed by fire on March 23, 2010. The collection consists of four photograph albums and loose photographs, including individual portraits of members and ministers of the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church. Three of the albums contain photographs and biographical and service information on members of the congregation serving in the armed forces during World War II. Also included are interior and exterior views of this church, and of the Hough Avenue Congregational Church.

 Abstract:  Miles Park Presbyterian Church was established in 1832 as the First Congregational Church of Newburgh, Ohio. It was chartered in 1842 as the First Presbyterian Church of Newburgh. By 1873 Newburgh was annexed to Cleveland and the Church was commonly known as Miles Park Presbyterian Church. It continued to be known by this name, despite a 1925 act to rename it the John M. Davidson Memorial Presbyterian Church Society. The collection consists of a photograph album and photographs of the Miles Park Presbyterian Church of Cleveland, Ohio. Included are portraits of members of the congregation, interior and exterior views of the church, and group portraits of various groups involved in church-related activities. The album depicts church members serving in the armed forces during World War II.

 Abstract:  Saint John's African Methodist Episcopal Church was the first African American church established in Cleveland, Ohio. Chartered by the African Methodist Episcopal Society in 1836, services were first held in members' homes. The first church building was dedicated in 1850. In 1908, after several moves to various church buildings in the nineteenth century, the congregation erected a new church building at East 40th Street and Central Avenue, where it remains. The collection consists of group portraits and views of groups and activities of members of Saint John's African Methodist Episcopal Church of Cleveland, Ohio. Included are photographs of choirs, Sunday School classes, and church boards.

 Abstract:  The Eighth United Church of Christ was organized in 1889 as the Eighth Reformed Congregation of Cleveland, Ohio. In 1945 it became the Eighth Evangelical and Reformed Church of Cleveland, Ohio. In 1957 the name was changed to the Eighth United Church of Christ. The church ceased operations in 1977. The collection consists of individual portraits of pastors and church members, group portraits of confirmation classes and miscellaneous groups, and views of the church building.

 Abstract:  Hope-Wesley United Methodist Church was formed in 1973, in Cleveland, Ohio, by the merger of Hope United Methodist and Wesley Methodist churches. Hope United was formed in 1967 by the merger of Emanuel Evangelical United Brethren (est. 1865) and First Evangelical United Brethren (est. 1854), two early German churches. Wesley Methodist was formed in 1947 by the merger of St. Paul's (est. 1853) and Franklin Ave. (est. 1833) Methodist Episcopal churches. The collection consists of photographs, one tintype, and two glass slides of the buildings and members of the German Evangelical United Brethren churches of Cleveland, Ohio, which eventually joined to form the Hope-Wesley United Methodist Church, the Emanuel Evangelical Church, and St. Paul's Methodist Church.

 Abstract:  John T. Weeden, Sr. (1901-1988) was a prominent African-American Baptist clergyman of Cleveland, Ohio. After pastoring two churches in Indianapolis, Indiana, he was called in 1948 to St. Timothy Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, remaining there until his death in 1988. In addition to his extensive involvement in a number of Baptist and religious organizations, Weeden was involved in civil rights and political issues, including service as co-chair of the clergy committee for Carl Stokes during the mayoral campaign of 1967. The collection consists of photographs of the African-American church community of Cleveland, Ohio, and images of political activities in Cleveland, including the 1964 voter registration campaign. In addition to photographs of Reverend Weeden and the Weeden family, the collection includes images of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Andrew Young, Ralph Abernathy, and Jesse Jackson in 1968; images of the King funeral procession in Atlanta, Georgia in 1968; portraits of Carl B. Stokes, Louis Stokes, Benjamin Hooks, and Dick Gregory; and views of St. Timothy Baptist Church, Cleveland, Ohio, and other African-American churches and church activities. The collection includes 207 black and white photographs, 248 color photographs, and 13 negatives in various formats.
